an apparition coming toward us as we left town..Dodge City is a strange place
We were expecting it to be a little flatter, so the truck didn't like it so much. We'd promised the poor thing a day of no uphill climbs, guess we lied, maybe Oklahoma will be better. We did see some spectacular wind farms....go figure. We're fighting 30mph head winds, gettin' 7mpg mileage and they're just harnessing that stuff to beat the band.
at least the gas prices were better than home
OK, so we're just cruising along minding our own business rolling into small town after small town...some with no stop lights, just a bank and a Subway, when we get close to the Oklahoma border and the city of Sitka....thought that place was in Alaska??? Anyway, we're driving down Main Street at the mind boggeling speed of 20mph taking in the sites. Sitka had one of the more developed downtown areas with many buildings and a mural painted on one of them. So here we are driving south and I notice that one of the store fronts on my right has a lot of cars (4....that's quite a few for a town with a population of 10) and a small truck going north swings into an open spot. I'm thinking it's gotta be a pretty good restaurant, with that many cars and new ones arriving. All of a sudden that small truck starts to back up and I swear, came within 2 inches of smacking our front side, my front side! I'm freeking...ohohohohohoh!!!!! the words just won't come out to alert Dan to the potential problem at hand. He finally figures somethings wrong when he sees me bracing against the dash and he swerves left to avoid the perp. I'm really surprised and very grateful that the trailer didn't end up on two wheels pulling the truck over with it. Had to pull over to regain composure and the guy just drove right past us like nothing happened!! Guess he changed his mind about eating breakfast or was making a U turn and cut it too short...we'll never know, but everyone came out OK, a little rattled but OK. If you look closely in the picture below you'll see the little son of gun...
he's the black bed next to the white SUV...taken from our windshield just after he pulled in
the area of town that needs some help
So now that we're composed, we continue to our destination of Duncan. We make a stop in Woodward to visit the local Wal-Mart, we need lunch and I lost my sunglasses. Did you know that almost every Wal-Mart has a Subway inside their store....a life saver for us since we really didn't want Micky D's or Burger King all the time and we could kill two bird with one stop. Did I mention that their parking lots are a lot easier to get into than most fast food places...they just don't cater to travel trailers, I don't get it.
I digress, upon arriving at Duncan and our lovely campground I open the trailer door and find the most awful mess you can imagine. The pantry door has come open, probably due to our little almost mishap in Sitka, and there is food from one end to the other. The worst was the container of Nutella that had come open. There was melted hazelnut chocolate goo everywhere....on the rug, on all the boxes that had fallen from the pantry, plus the floor, fire extinguisher, cabinet doors...you get the picture, IT WAS A MESS!!! I spent most of the evening cleaning that up...note to self, DON'T BRING NUTELLA ON ROAD TRIPS, you don't need the chocolate anyway!
Tomorrow will be a better day....stay tuned
